The stunning Pocono Knob Overlook, Mt. Pocono, Monroe County

The Knob Overlook is a place that I had gone to as a kid. We do not often end up in the Poconos anymore since we are all the way in Pittsburgh. I remember trying to take Brit to this spot about 15 years ago when we were driving through, but had no luck finding it since it was not labelled on maps and Google Maps was not nearly as functional back then as it is now for finding things. We were in the area recently and were finally able to find it. In the time since I had last been up there, a good bit of development had occurred. Over the last few decades there have been battles to destroy public access to the overlook with the development of high end housing in place of the overlook. Thankfully those efforts have failed and just recently, the land was completely protected as remaining as public open space for eternity. This is a big deal. I can find documented history of people flocking to the Pocono Knob Overlook going all the way back into the 1800s for the scenery. I am glad this land will continue to be a landmark like this.

Looking towards the Eastern Poconos, Delaware Water Gap, New Jersey and New York with an endless sea of summer green.
Camelback Ski Area and Big Pocono State Park are way out there.
The views I got from this location so many years ago stuck with me for close to 30 years and I am certain that experience has been had by thousands of others. I am glad that future generations will have that same opportunity. This view is a direct counterpart to the Big Pocono State Park Overlook, with wide views looking directly at that location, and all the way around into the Delaware Water Gap, New Jersey, and New York. The views from this location are very far and wide, a wide panorama of beauty that the region has to offer. It has also been maintained and kept open so there are no obstructions to the view. A trail is also being developed around the site. The tourism scene of the Poconos has long been in flux, but through all of that upheaval, between resorts closing and other kinds of booming resorts and attractions taking their place including water parks, indoor waterparks, and even a casino, the beauty of the region has always remained, and the Pocono Knob Overlook has long been a huge part of that. This scenic overlook was often "overlooked." I do think it would be great if they had some directional signage in town pointing towards the overlook, because this spot is so wonderful.
Looking towards the western side of the Poconos, seeing the landscape get wilder as it goes west.
The water tower is at "Beautiful Mt Airy Lodge!" The land of the old lodge has been rebuilt with a casino and hotel.

Highly recommend checking out this spectacular spot. Every bit as amazing as I remember it and I am so glad that public access to it has been guaranteed now.

It is located on Knob Road in the borough of Mt. Pocono. The road loops around the entire overlook, so this is a roadside spot that anyone can access.

Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct: A Bridge that Shaped a Nation in a Beautiful Location

One spot that I have been trying to get to for many years is Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct, in the most northeastern corner of the state, where the border of the Delaware River actually leads into New York State instead of New Jersey. This is a beautiful part of the state.

Note the trough setup on the bridge, showing how the canal would have flowed across the bridge.

When we visited in June, the roadsides and cliffs were covered in Mountain Laurel. We were passing through the area en route to New England, and stopping here and the Hudson Valley en route.

A demonstration of what the canal right-of-way looked like

We stumbled upon Monticello, NY and the original Woodstock location, which was completely unexpected and a pleasant surprise, with a giant rainbow in complete view over the Woodstock location. It is incredible just how much American history from all eras sat along this route.

Anyways, back to the bridge. This bridge is stunning. It was an early project for Roebling, prior to him designing the stunning Brooklyn Bridge in NYC. It was built for canal use in 1847, but when that dried up (get the pun?) in 1898, the 535 foot span was converted to vehicular use. It is the oldest remaining wire suspension bridge in the world. This lifespan is aided through both preservation attention, and a design that has barriers to prevent ice floe damage, and also allowed for the preservation of business for logging companies of the day that would float logs down the river. Previous bridges would create a literal "logjam"  for that business, with logs getting caught on the bridge. The ice floe barriers prevented this.

Most bridges that were used for canals ended up used like this for a little bit and then got demolished, or they sat derelict and were removed. This solid and sturdy bridge ended up being converted to pedestrian and vehicular use, and then was restored when recognition for its historic importance was realized.

Note the top of the suspension bridge.

It remains the primary vehicular corridor across the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New York and a central focus for the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreation River Corridor of PA and NY. The old bridge, and surrounding old structures are really neat to see, along with the rugged topography and natural wooded setting. This would definitely be a lovely place to spend a few days to slow down and recharge.

As I walked down to the riverbank to get a view of the bridge crossing the river, a deer was standing there grazing on overgrowth. It is tough to see the deer in this spot, since I walked down with only my wide angle lens. The river pleasantly flows through this spot and it is easy to see how this is a canoeing, kayaking, and tubing destination.

I expected this to be a beautiful spot, but even with those high expectations, they were still exceeded. The natural beauty of this overall region is really something special. The bridge is located within 30 minutes of Lake Wallenpaupack and Promised Land State Park, and within 40-50 minutes of most points within the Poconos, and within 40 minutes of Monticello, NY and the original Woodstock site. If you are crossing into New England on I-84, you need to detour and check out this spot. Highly worth it. Stop and have a picnic lunch during a road trip to refresh. On the PA side of the bridge, the small town of Lackawaxen has a few small businesses, and the Zane Grey Museum covers the early part of the writer's life as he grew up and started young adulthood in this small town.

Autumn Views From Big Pocono State Park and Camelback Resort

Even with how large this addition is, it looks tiny from the top of the mountain! The majesty of this view of the Poconos is unmatched.

Now for what we visited for: thrills! Since it is a little too chilly to operate the 37 watersides at the outdoor Camelbeach, we are going to fly on the Alpine Coaster and Ziplines! I was not quite sure of what to expect with the Alpine Coaster.
The autumn yellows were especially vivid!
It is the option of the riders to go as fast or slow as they like thanks to hand braking! You read that right, the rider controls the speed and stopping! It does not look like it is that intense, but I was definitely wrong.
The ride is also open year round! I will have to see if we can get up here again in the winter
The coaster travels along 4500 feet of track, good for second longest in the state to Dorney Park's Steel Force. With a single car, this length of this coaster feels even longer! Throughout the course it flies through drops and helix elements that switchback down the Camelback slopes that have made the resort a huge destination.
Knowing me, you know that I chose to not brake at all until the end. This ride provides a huge thrill, especially on the helix elements. When the car really starts flying, you are really in for a wild ride with nothing but a single seatbelt holding you in.
The view from the top of the mountain is phenomenal. Big Pocono State Park is located there and provides one of the most stunning vistas of the Pocono Mountains. This view is looking down the Asp expert trail. Just to think in just over a month you will see nothing but snow in this view. This is where the longest and tallest zipline in North America is launched from.
 Zipline time!
With the huge expansion coming and the plethora of thrills offered throughout the resort, the future looks really bright. I would love to see them contact nearby Great Coasters International to build a tremendous terrain hugging wood coaster at some point in the near future in addition to adding some more amusement ride attractions.

Exploring Promised Land State Park in the Poconos

Today we visit beautiful Promised Land State Park. This state park in the Poconos is just lovely. It is a relaxed place with four lovely campgrounds, CCC era cabins, two beautiful little lakes, with one primarily for fishing and kayaking, and the other for fishing and kayaking, along with a beautiful sandy beach for swimming. Promised Land has many beautiful and rugged trails as well. It is mostly surrounded by Delaware State Forest and it is one of the most untouched and rugged areas within the popular Pocono region.

Fishing at sunset on the Lower Lake. The Lower Lake Campground Area has ample camping spaces and it is adjacent to the lower lake. Fishing, taking in a sunset, and bird watching are all awesome things to do in this spot.

If you are into fishing, or have a kayak, canoe, or small boat, both lakes are great to visit. Only electric motors are allowed, so instead of having to navigate through the wakes of speed boats on nearby Lake Wallenpaupack, you can relax and have the lakes at the state park to yourself. The beach area is also wonderful.
These photos were taken before I had great camera gear, but that little speck is a bald eagle. There are nests in the state park area and bird watching is just fantastic here.
To tie all of the great things of Promised Land Together, the entire area is covered in beautiful second growth forest. The Little Falls Trail is a beautiful and easy little hike that gives views of the Little Falls of Promised Land State Park. While they are only a few feet tall, they are absolutely beautiful. The trail is a 2.7 mile loop and located right near the entrance to the Lower Lake Campground. There are 50 miles of hiking trails through beautiful Promised Land State Park and Delaware State Forest. The Little Falls and Conservation Island Trails are just lovely, but there are seemingly endless hikes you can take in this area.

The beautiful forests along the Little Falls Trail.

It is such a serene place.
I was going through my old photo collections and found this set from 14 years ago. Here is one of my long lost furry friends, Sophie, a Black and Tan Shiba Inu. I have a little tear in the corner of my eye seeing my old hiking companion. Thankfully our current doggo loves to hike just as much as she does.

You can see lots of rhododendrons and mountain laurel at Promised Land State Park.
Little Falls!
Promised Land State Park is a lovely place to visit. On top of the natural beauty, most of the infrastructure that brings access to the state park and area dates back to the Great Depression and the CCC. The state park is home to the Masker Museum, which shows the history of the state park, and the CCC. The park's CCC cabins are absolutely lovely and they are lakefront.

It is also within close range of many of the great attractions of the Poconos Region. It is within a 25 minute drive of the Delaware Water Gap, 15 minutes from Lake Wallenpaupack, ten minutes to the beautiful glacial lake area of Bruce Lake and hiking, and within 45 minutes of most other points within the Pocono Plateau. The state park is a great hub for seeing the beautiful stuff that the northern Poconos region has to offer.
