Greenville Railroad Museum Park: Preserving Railroad Heritage in a Public Setting

The Greenville Railroad Park and Museum is a pretty neat place to see railroad heritage. The borough is historically a major railroad center and over the years, the grounds of the old train station have been transformed into a museum and public park area.
Over the years, equipment has been donated to the museum, including the park's centerpiece, the 1936 Baldwin locomotive. It was built to be a switcher carrying hot ore from the steel mills in Pittsburgh for the Union Railroad. It was sold to the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad in Duluth, MN, to carry mined iron ore to the docks for shipping in 1949. It was retired in 1958 and Bessemer kept it for donation and it was put on display in Greenville in 1985. It is the largest steam switcher locomotive ever made. One side is painted as it would be displayed during its time with the Union Railroad, and with Duluth paint on the other. Additionally, the park has an ore car, two cabooses, a speeder, old signals, exhibits, a gift shop, and more.
An old Union Switch and Signal light, which used to be made in Swissvale.

Greenville Railroad Park is small, but well worth checking out, especially if you are a rail fan. It is a must see as part of what I call the "northwest PA trifecta" of places that rail fans need to check out in Northwestern PA. Greenville Railroad Park, the Lake Shore Railway Museum, and the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad. It is also one of the three museums in Greenville, which include this, the Greenville Area Historical Society, and the Greenville Canal Museum. For more information on visiting, check out their webpage at https://greenvillemuseumalliance.org

Carnegie Library Music Hall of Homestead: A Historic Community Treasure

Andrew Carnegie did a great job of cementing his legacy, and possibly trying to whitewash the brutal labor practices of his that brought him his wealth, through creating community hubs with his libraries, music halls, and overall community centers. The largest of which is the Music Hall, Museums, and Library Complex in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, but perhaps the most intact of his smaller community based facilities is the Carnegie Library of Homestead.
This place is an absolute gem and hub for community activity and spirit. Through thick and thin, this library has stayed with the community of Homestead. When it was built, the city was a boomtown with one of the largest steel mills in the nation. that has since gone and the city has been caught in hard times for decades. Through this though, the facility has pushed on and served as a positive and continuously operating hub for the community.

On the left hand side of the facility, the stunning Music Hall is beautifully adorned, has seats for 1047 guests, and has hosted so many different acts since it was established in 1898.
Our visit this past Friday was to see "The Princess Bride: An Inconceivable Evening with Cary Elwes" which was pretty great. They did a screening of The Princess Bride Movie with a Q&A with Cary Elwes, who played Westley in the movie. It was a great evening in a very intimate venue.
The carving details are so beautiful.
The seats are so cool as well. What is pretty amazing is that this facility has remained in constant use. Its nearby, and slightly older neighbor, the Carnegie Library of Braddock, has not been as lucky, and it has been an uphill battle to restore and preserve that old facility, which had actually fully closed down in the 1970s. I would love to see that facility shine again like this one does.

Cary Elwes during his Q&A and presentation about the movie. We highly recommend checking out this facility, they have a number of great upcoming concerts, comedy tours, presentations, and more.
The Dorothy 6 Blast Furnace Cafe, which is located a few block walk away from the facility. Their food and environment are just phenomenal. They have fantastic food and a great tap list in a really cool space. They also have great high end dishes that are made from scratch, including hand made pierogies.

For more information on upcoming shows and the facility itself, check out their website at www.CarnegieofHomestead.org

Route 40 Scenic Overlook/Mt. Summit Overlook: Hopwood, PA

The Route 40 Overlook in Hopwood, Fayette County, is a really cool place to pull off and take in an amazing view of the topography of southwestern PA. In this location, you can really see how the region is a glaciated plateau. Just a few minutes away from here, the Jumonville Cross, and Laurel Caverns, give views that look northwest, as opposed to the southwesterly view from this location, that you can see the top of the US Steel Tower in Pittsburgh from, which is 50 miles from here as the crow flies.

In this view from Route 40, you get a sweeping view of the rugged area down to Uniontown. This overlook dates back to the early days of automobile travel, here on the old National Road, and it has caught the attention of roadtrippers since the dawn of automobile travel, and earlier, for this was the site of an Indian path and visitors to the nearby Summit Inn include Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, and Henry Ford. George Washington's first battle (and defeat) was at Jumonville Glen, just a few minutes from here.

It is impossible to miss this overlook if you go to Ohiopyle State Park, Fallingwater, Nemacolin, or any of the other attractions in the immediate area while approaching from any western point. If coming from Pittsburgh, take Route 51 to Route 40 and you can't miss it.
Fall colors are especially vivid in this spot, along with sunsets. If visiting, remember that this can only be accessed from the Eastbound lanes of Route 40, so if you are approaching from the west, you will need to go down the hill and turnaround in Uniontown to access this spot.

Freedom Falls in Fall: A Treasure in Venango County

Freedom Falls, nearly adjacent Rockland Furnace, and the Rockland Tunnel and the Allegheny River Trail, is an awesome place to explore. While it is not the largest waterfall, for northwestern PA, it is pretty substantial. Definitely wider than it is tall, and the rocks that the falls flow over add so much character. In autumn, the falls get surrounded by leaves, and the falls sometimes even freeze up completely in the winter.
The Falls are roughly 25 feet in height.

For more background information and info on finding the falls, and historical background on the adjacent pristine iron furnace, and the rail trail with its old tunnel, check out this article.  This is also located very close to the Kennerdell Overlook above the Allegheny River, and the Kennerdell Tract of Clear Creek State Forest.

Exploring the Prairie at the Jennings Environmental Education Center: Butler County

Jennings Environmental Education Center is an awesome place to explore. It is home to one of the only prairie habitats in the state and it is cool to see at any time of the year, but especially in late summer and early fall, where all of the copious amounts of wildflowers are blossoming in a color display that rivals that of fall foliage and spring wildflowers.

It is an explosion of color that is akin to fireworks. In addition to the flora, the diversity of species within this habitat is spectacular too, with so many different insects pollinating the flowers from bees, to many different species of butterflies, and lots of small birds.

An endangered species of snake, the massausauga rattlesnake, lives within this habitat, and the purple blazing star flower, which is rare for Western PA, makes this place a notable destination for botanists. The rocky and clay based makeup of the ground within the prairie area makes it inhospitable for tree growth, so low to the ground wildflower species call this prairie home. This is the only protected prairie habitat within the state.

The Jennings Environmental Education Center is designated specifically as a PA State Park. It is one of four state parks that are specifically run as environmental education centers, in addition to Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center, and Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center.

While many state parks have interpretive centers that run specific conservation and education programming, these four areas are specifically kept as nature demonstration zones. Jennings Environmental Education Center offers 300 acres to explore, with the prairie area covering 20 acres. The state park is located immediately adjacent to the eastern border of Moraine State Park.

Long before this tract of land came under the care of the State Park system, it was sought out for its biological diversity by Dr. Otto Emery Jennings, a leading botanist who realized how special this tract was when he found it in 1905. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, which was fundamental in the founding of most of the state park areas in Western PA, created the "Old Stone House Natural Area" in 1952, and in 1979 in was converted into the Jennings Environmental Education Center and named in the honor of Dr. Jennings. The history of this tract goes back at least 15,000 years in human history, with first native Americans settled into the area in pursuit of wooly mammoths in the tailings of the receded glaciers that were once located in this location. In the 16th century, the Iroquois settled in this region and farmed it. During the colonial era, the Venango Trail, which went from Pittsburgh to Franklin, went through the property, and some of the people that traversed it included Tecumseh, Marquis De Lafayette, and George Washington. The Old Stone House, which is located across Route 8 from Jennings, dates back to 1822 and is a stunning old building.

In addition to the prairie, Jennings offers trails through beautiful woodland areas and reclaimed wetlands. Passive treatment systems have been created to filter acid mine runoff from a nearby abandoned mine. The entire area is a glimpse into what environmental remediation can lead to with positive outcomes, a model that could be replicated across the state.

Five miles of trails go through this lovely 300 acre property, which are dog friendly as well. Most of the trails are rated as easy, with one being rated as more difficult due to large boulders and slight elevation change.

CeCe has it made in the shade

This is a lovely place to hike and recharge. There are areas to sit and picnic and appreciate the beautiful setting of the park. We highly recommend spending an afternoon at this lovely place. It is conveniently located just about an hour north of Pittsburgh, and 15 minutes northwest of Butler, making it easy to reach from pretty much anywhere in western PA. Between this, the adjacent Moraine State Park, and nearby McConnells Mill State Park, you have so many great natural places to check out.

This is the heart of some of the greatest achievements of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the PA State Parks system in regards to conservation and the opening up of natural lands for the public enjoyment of all.

Mt. Pisgah Altar Scenic Overlook: Stunning Views near Bald Eagle State Forest

Mt. Pisgah Altar Scenic Overlook is both a labor of love and an appreciation of the majesty of nature. On our last visit, the valley behind the altar was filled with fog, so the scenic view was absent, but on this visit, there was no fog and it was beautifully clear. Set on a private tract in the middle of a state forest area, this is a unique spot. Unless you specifically knew it was located here, it would be very difficult to just stumble upon this remote spot in Snyder County, on top of Shade Mountain, surrounded by Bald Eagle State Forest.
The site was built by Robert Cryan of Beaver Springs in 1979. He built it with the intention of having Easter Sunday services at the site. Since then, many weddings, and more have occurred at this beautiful site. A long stone road leads to the altar at the top of the mountain.
